National Assessment of Basic Competencies

The National Assessment of Basic Competencies measures students’ competency in reading and mathematical literacy among the 6th, 8th and 10th grade students. The student questionnaire is complemented with questions regarding the socio-economic and family background of the student. In addition to the student level statistics, the school questionnaire investigates the condition of the schools, and the school sites (separate school and school-site questionnaires). From 2006 to 2010 all student in the 6th 8th and 10th grades are included in the survey in every May. As a result 5 datasets for each year are available: 3 student datasets with the scores of the two literacy tests and the family background questions, one education institution and one school site file. These datasets can be merged with one another within and across years on the school level, and from 2008 onwards across years on the individual level.
